With white fillings, it’s possible to protect your tooth from further damage and decay in a way that blends in with your smile.
White fillings are exactly what their name implies: white-coloured fillings. This means they blend in well with your teeth, unlike the old amalgam (silver) fillings you will doubtless be familiar with.
Examination: The damage is examined and if it is not severe enough to require an onlay or a crown, we can proceed with a white filling.
Preparation: Any decayed matter is removed from the tooth and the filling material is placed and shaped.
UV light: The filling is hardened with UV light.
You’re done!
Why are white fillings preferable to amalgam fillings?
Aside from their aesthetic value, white fillings are also less prone to damage. This is because they don’t expand and contract in response to temperature changes. There’s also less preparation involved, which is always a bonus for patients.
White fillings also preserve more of your natural tooth structure, which is made possible because the composite materials chemically bond directly to the surface of your tooth.
Is an anaesthetic used as part of the process?
In most cases, an anaesthetic is used to numb the area. If you’re a little nervous about having an anaesthetic, we can offer you the option of sedation to help you relax.
When is it time to have my amalgam filling replaced?
We will be able to tell you if it’s time to upgrade your amalgam filling. If your amalgam filling is still intact, you may still wish to replace it with a more cosmetic alternative that is not so noticeable when you smile.
